Job openings across the wireless space look to remain ample, with mobile operator appearing to be aggressively targeting new applicants across their operations.
According to the Boston Business Journal, Verizon Wireless is looking to hire up to 150 new employees in the Boston area as part of new staffing requirements for the carrier’s retail sales division. The carrier had “encouraged” applicants to apply for the positions online to be eligible for an on-site interview.
The report mentioned that Verizon Wireless has recently opened six of its new “smart store” concepts in the New England region, which look to emphasize more than just signing up customers to service. Verizon Wireless showed off one of its smart stores during the recent CTIA Super Mobility Week trade show in Las Vegas. The location included several “interactive zones” that focused on different wireless technologies and products, including a section for accessories, a section in-home entertainment and a section for smart-home automation.
In Colorado, Verizon recently participated in a job fair where the carrier was looking to hire 100 new, full- and part-time employees, all with benefits, according to reports.
Regional telecom operator Cincinnati Bell was also set to participate in a job fair this week in an attempt to fill 180 positions in its home market of Cincinnati. The positions available include consumer sales, field operations and corporate positions.
Sprint layoffs expected
The story is a bit muddled at Sprint, which is reportedly set to cut corporate jobs as part of an operational restructuring under newly installed CEO Marcelo Claure, though some of its retail locations are looking to hire seasonal retail help.
Sprint’s expected corporate job cuts at its Overland Park, Kansas, headquarters have some employees already preparing for the worst. A report from Kansas City-based radio station KCUR includes an interview with a current Sprint employee who is preparing herself for a potential layoff.
“Personally, I am cleaning everything out of my cube,” Peg McMahon told the radio station.
