Online freelance employment site Elance came out with its end of year employment trends, noting a 98% increase in the number of jobs posted on the site by businesses seeking mobile developers this year. Not surprisingly, Elance said it expects that growth to continue into 2011, as more people buy smart phones. Applications development jobs for Apple Inc.’s iPhone product were up 35% for the year, while Research In Motion Ltd. BlacBerry development jobs were down 19%.
“While traditional employment was stagnant, online employment began to soar as many businesses embraced hiring and managing in the cloud,” the company said, adding that it saw more than 375,000 new jobs in 2010, up more than 40% from the prior year. New York City was the No. 1 spot for paying freelancers, while Portland, Ore., rose to No. 3.

Programmers for Research In Motion Ltd.s’ BlackBerry operating system jumped 11 spots to No. 89, while Google Inc. Android programmers saw a 61% increase in demand.
