MetroPCS coverage now includes Mexico in battle with Boost, Cricket

MetroPCS coverage expansion taps T-Mobile US’ recent North America promotion

T-Mobile US is transferring some of its cross-border promotion to prepaid brand MetroPCS as it continues to battle against spirited rivals Boost Mobile and Cricket Wireless.

MetroPCS customers currently on plans beginning at $40 per month can now sign up for the Mexico Unlimited plan that provides for unlimited calling, messaging to the U.S. and access to their current data plans, including LTE usage, when traveling in Mexico; and unlimited calling and messaging to Mexico from the U.S. Customers signing up for the plan by Aug. 31 will receive the service free through the end of the year, with those missing the deadline charged $5 per month for the service.

T-Mobile US was quick to point out that neither Sprint’s Boost Mobile nor AT&T Mobility’s Cricket Wireless offer data roaming services in Mexico. Boost only offers calling and messaging options from the U.S. to Mexico, while Cricket does allow for calling and messaging when traveling in Mexico.

The new offering also piggybacks on T-Mobile US’ recently announced “Mobile without Borders” initiative, which launches today and allows T-Mobile US-branded postpaid and prepaid customers to place calls, send text messages and access data services in Canada and Mexico by tapping into their current rate plans at no extra cost. The data access includes LTE speeds where available, and customers can also place calls from the U.S. to all numbers in Canada and Mexico for no extra cost. MetroPCS currently does not include the Canada component of the offer.

T-Mobile US last August laid claim to being the nation’s No. 1 prepaid provider, having surpassed Sprint for that unofficial position. The carrier said its operations received a boost from the acquisition of MetroPCS in 2013, which brought nearly 10 million prepaid customers to T-Mobile US. The carrier said it added 178,000 direct prepaid net additions during the second quarter, which was a 75% increase year-over-year.
