Qualcomm Inc. is backing an industry association that aims to create a “mobile giving channel” for nonprofits looking to raise money via text messaging.
The chipmaker invested an undisclosed amount in the Mobile Giving Foundation, a Seattle-area outfit that serves as a messaging gateway, billing settlement provider and records clearinghouse between operators and charities. The MGF first drew attention during this year’s Super Bowl, when the United Way ran a single, 10-second spot featuring New England Patriot Tom Brady that encouraged fans to use SMS to give to an anti-childhood obesity campaign.
Qualcomm is the organization’s “founding patron,” other backers include 1024 Wireless Services, Acta Wireless, Hook Mobile, Mobile Accord and VeriSign. The MGF hopes to raise a $1 million operating budget for each of the next two years, and plans to launch a formal fundraising effort at next month’s Mobile Marketing Forum in New York.
“The generous support of Qualcomm and our contributors gives us the financial underpinning to enable the mobile channel for charitable giving through mobile phones,” said MGF founder Jim Manis. “We believe the ease of use and immediate response inherent in wireless communication will have a very positive effect on fundraising efforts of charitable groups, expand the U.S. base of giving and enable people to support their favorite causes through a new channel committed to the highest standards.”
