Alltel Corp. is launching a service that provides a variety of location-based information, including the locations of gas stations, restaurants and hotels as well as local events, traffic conditions and weather forecasts.
The LBS application, dubbed WHERE, provides maps, directions and customized information to GPS-enabled handsets, and is available for download from Alltel’s Axcess Shop for $3 per month. It will initially be available on five handsets: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s Wafer, Hue and u520; and LG Electronic Co. Ltd.’s Wave and AX8600.
WHERE is an application developed by Massachusetts-based ULocate Communications. The application allows customers to personalize their content with the use of widgets, which allow users to choose location-based content from different companies.
