From contact centers to network ops, U Mobile bets on frontier models

U Mobile has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, with AWS providing the cloud backbone, in a bid to embed AI across its operations, workforce, customer experience, and enterprise offerings. The Malaysian operator is framing the collaboration as the foundation for becoming the country’s first AI-enabled telco — a claim that’s easy to make and harder to prove, but the deal is notably broad rather than tied to a single product launch.
The division of labor is fairly clear. U Mobile acts as the domain owner, supplying the proprietary telecom data needed to fine-tune and evaluate AI solutions for its environment. OpenAI brings its frontier models, along with code generation and agentic systems designed for enterprise workflows. AWS supplies the infrastructure layer, including Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock, to actually deploy and scale those models in production.
AWS and OpenAI, of course, also have a multi-year global strategic partnership under which AWS hosts OpenAI models natively and serves as an exclusive third-party cloud channel for OpenAI Frontier. In other words, U Mobile isn’t stitching together three separate vendor relationships — it’s plugging into a stack that OpenAI and AWS are already co-developing at global scale, which gives a mid-sized Malaysian telco access to infrastructure it could never build itself.
Customer experience
The customer-facing side of this partnership isn’t starting from zero. U Mobile ran a proof-of-concept with AWS for generative AI Contact Center Intelligence back in July 2024, using SageMaker and Bedrock for post-call analytics, live agent assistance, and knowledge base retrieval. Agents received AI-generated suggested responses and information pulled from U Mobile’s knowledge base during live calls, rather than digging for answers manually.
The documented results were solid, if unspectacular in the way these deployments usually are. Inquiries got resolved faster, call-quality control improved through automated post-call analytics and sentiment tracking, and agents were freed up to focus on higher-value interactions. Encouraged by the PoC, U Mobile began a full generative AI contact center rollout in early 2025 — one that its executives have touted as “first-of-its-kind in ASEAN.” That’s a marketing claim more than a verifiable fact, given how aggressively regional players like Singtel and Telkomsel have pursued their own AI-assisted customer service tooling, but U Mobile was certainly early.
The OpenAI partnership makes things slightly more ambitious. Frontier models and agent frameworks open the door to multilingual support — no small thing in a market where customers move between Malay, English, Mandarin, and Tamil — as well as complex troubleshooting and proactive outreach. Whether proactive AI outreach lands as helpful or as spam is a question U Mobile will have to answer carefully.
Network operations
Behind the scenes, the plans get more technical and arguably more consequential. U Mobile intends to apply AI to radio access network optimization, transport network monitoring, and IT ticket triage, following the agentic AI approach AWS has been pushing for telcos. Local, domain-specific AI agents deployed on AWS Outposts or edge infrastructure would ingest network telemetry and detect anomalies with low latency — the kind of workload that can’t tolerate a round trip to a distant cloud region.
The payoff, if it works, is less downtime. Predictive maintenance for network equipment and automated root-cause analysis for outages could cut the time between something breaking and someone fixing it. Security is part of the same picture. U Mobile plans to use AI to spot unusual traffic patterns and potential intrusions in near real time, moving beyond the traditional rules-based systems that most telcos still lean on and that attackers have long since learned to route around.
The ambitions extend into the back office too. Routine tasks in finance, HR, and procurement are slated for automation, and Codex-style code models will support internal development teams with generation and review, shortening software cycles for both internal systems and customer-facing apps. None of this is unique to U Mobile, of course. Telcos across ASEAN are chasing the same operational gains, and AWS publishes reference architectures for exactly these use cases. The partnership gives U Mobile earlier access to frontier models than rivals relying on generic cloud AI services, but it’s a head start in a race, not a finish line.
Enterprise innovation and ecosystem
The third leg of the deal runs through U Mobile’s Enterprise Innovation Platform, which launched in January 2026 as a neutral sandbox for enterprises, SMEs, startups, academia, and public-sector bodies to test 5G-Advanced and AI use cases. OpenAI now joins as an Anchor Partner, sitting alongside AWS, Huawei Malaysia, Palo Alto Networks, and Qualcomm.
For platform users, the practical upshot is access to OpenAI’s frontier models through AWS-hosted services in a controlled, data-resident environment — a meaningful detail in a market where regulators care about where telecom and customer data actually lives. The co-creation focus areas are the usual suspects for the region, and reasonably so. Smart manufacturing, predictive maintenance, logistics optimization, and public-sector digital services are all areas where Malaysian enterprises have real problems and, until now, limited access to this class of tooling. Notably, EIP is open to organizations regardless of whether they’re U Mobile customers, which positions the operator as an ecosystem facilitator rather than a closed telco lab.
There’s a strategic subtlety too. Leaning heavily on OpenAI models running on AWS infrastructure carries an obvious lock-in risk — the global AWS-OpenAI partnership involves tens of billions in committed investment, and that kind of gravity tends to pull customers into a single stack.
