PicoChip gets funding for WiMAX plans

BATH, U.K.-Intel Capital was among the investors fueling a $20.5 million round of funding for PicoChip, the wireless semiconductor vendor said Thursday.

Scottish Equity Partners led the round, which brought PicoChip’s total funding to $41.5 million. Other investors include newcomer Rothschild, as well as previous investors Pond Venture Partners and Atlas Venture.

The chip supplier said it will use the capital to expand its work in next-generation wireless silicon and software.

“The quality of our backers is an endorsement of our leading position in WiMAX,” said Guillaume d’Eyssautier, PicoChip’s president and chief executive officer. “We will use this funding to expand on PicoChip’s success in WiMAX and deliver products for W-CDMA, TD-SCDMA and other wireless markets.”
