Sprint combats churn with Direct 2 You service

Sprint plans for 5,000 vehicles targeting home delivery service

Sprint is looking to bring its wireless experience closer to customers, launching a program that it claims will bring the in-store experience to a customer’s own home, office or “other location they choose.”

The Sprint Direct 2 You service calls for a “Sprint-trained expert” to bring a device of the customers’ choice to their preferred location, where they will set up the new device, including transferring all content and providing a tutorial on how the device works. The offer is available to qualified customers eligible to upgrade their device. Those customers will receive an offer via text or e-mail about the upgrade opportunity, and can then call, text or e-mail to set up an appointment time and location.

Sprint touted the service-friendly nature of the offer, but as it’s currently tied to device upgrades also looks to be a way for the carrier to proactively manage potential churn. The carrier reported a year-over-year increase in churn for its last fiscal quarter, which on the postpaid side jumped from 2.15% to 2.33%, and on the prepaid side increased from 3.22% to 3.97%. T-Mobile US reported that it had a 2.2 to 1 positive porting ratio with Sprint during the final quarter of 2014, a trend it said continued into the first part of this year.

The service is rolling out today in the carrier’s hometown of Kansas City, Kan., expanding to Chicago and Miami on April 20, with continued expansion throughout the year. Sprint said it is looking to have about 5,000 vehicles dedicated to the service in “major metropolitan” markets by year-end.

Sprint put together a short video on how the service works.

Sprint announced last week it was looking to add nearly 3,500 jobs through the expansion of its retail efforts at 1,435 RadioShack locations across the country. Those locations will be co-branded with both Sprint and RadioShack, with plans to complete the “store-within-a-store” concept in the coming months as Sprint expects to occupy around one-third of the retail space at these locations.
