RCR Wireless News’ latest update with NFV/SDN Reality Check

Nokia Networks has partnered with Finland’s Aalto University and vendors Coriant and EXFO on a proof of concept designed to tap SDN and NFV platforms to add agility and reduce costs associated with mobile backhaul services.
The entities said they have developed an ETSI Industry Specifications Group for NFV proof of concept that shows a virtualized LTE network applying SDN technology to the mobile backhaul, transport and core network functions. The SDN-based platform is said to increase network economies due to the ability to use hardware for multiple functions.
Oracle Communications recently unveiled its Network Service Orchestration Solution, targeting one of the greater challenges facing mobile network operators as they make plans toward virtualizing parts of their operations using NFV and SDN technology.
Oracle stated that the solution is part of its broader orchestration framework that is designed to analyze network performance information, evaluates the network’s operation against predefined policies and business rules, and can trigger the appropriate action to automatically modify the behavior of services, network functions and virtualized infrastructure.
The Open Network Lab said it added heavyweights Cisco Systems and SK Telecom to its open-source SDN Open Network Operating System platform as it looks to accelerate SDN adoption. The two companies join founding members AT&T, NTT Communications, Ciena, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel and NEC.
In addition, the Linux Foundation’s OpenDaylight Project announced the addition of CA Technologies, IIX, Megaport and Spirent to its open-source platform project. The expansion pushes the organization’s total to more than 300 developers.
RCR Wireless News Editor-In-Chief Dan Meyer recently had the chance to speak with Tektronix Communications’ Said Saadeh and Ravindra Chittimoori to get their views on a number of topics related to the current NFV and SDN space, including expectations in terms of opex vs. capex savings, some of the bigger challenges facing the ecosystem today and the industry’s development of important service orchestration platforms. Meyer started off by asking them to provide their views on where the NFV market currently stood in its evolution.
We also want to direct those with more interest in the NFV space to check out a new report we just released on the topic: “Network Function Virtualization: Standards, Ecosystem and 2015 Predictions.
The report looks at the where the market currently is in terms of NFV development following a strong 2014, how the ecosystem is evolving, challenges facing the market and provides some insight into where some see the market going in 2015.
We also hosted a webinar on the NFV space, which included panel members from Strategy Analytics, OPNFV, Hitachi, Metaswitch and F5. Please make sure to check out a replay of that webinar on the RCRwireless.com site.
Thanks again for watching this week’s NFV and SDN Reality Check.
