SAN JOSE, Calif.-Low-power graphics chip maker Silicon Motion Inc. reported it has invented an embedded digital signal processor technology that will enable the company to expand into the digital voice, digital music and wireless markets.
SMI said the new technology can be used for wireless communications and digital audio processing, and when coupled with its fundamental modular design methodologies will allow SMI to build a complete mobile system on a chip.
“This is a significant and strategic breakthrough for us,” said Wallace Kou, president and chief executive officer of SMI. “This new technology sets the stage for us to play an integral role in the evolution of Internet appliances and supports a variety of new standards.”
Next-generation features that SMI said it will be able to produce with the chip include voice command and noise cancellation in automobiles, wireless personal music devices and audio recording in digital cameras.
