The deployment of 5G networks has been one of the most anticipated technological advancements in recent years. The lightning-fast speeds, low latency, and massive connectivity that 5G offers make it the perfect platform for a wide range of innovative applications across various industries. Read on to explore some of the vertical 5G use cases already implemented, as well as those on the horizon.

Boosting efficiency and output in manufacturing with 5G

Factories are using 5G to embrace flexible manufacturing, a production process that is adaptable and responsive to changing market demands, product designs, and production requirements. Flexible manufacturing through 5G unlocks many ways for companies to boost efficiency and productivity. Samsung has deployed some of these capabilities at its smart factory in Suwon, Korea, connecting cameras, sensors, and robots with a 5G network that monitors the equipment and environment to automate production. This allows workers to monitor and analyze machine performance and quality control in real-time and tap automated systems to complete repetitive tasks more quickly and accurately than human workers. Other possibilities include augmented reality technology that integrates digital information with the real-world environment and digital twins to simulate the behavior of physical assets, allowing manufacturers to identify and correct potential issues before they occur.

Enhancing productivity and safety in the construction sector

The construction industry is realizing the potential of private cellular networks and tapping the associated high speeds and low latency to ensure uninterrupted communication and data transfer between workers, machines and project stakeholders, improving the overall workflow. Samsung and NAVER Cloud are working with Hoban Construction in South Korea, deploying the first 5G network for construction in the country. Applications include drone-based high-resolution monitoring, IoT concrete strength sensors, smart safety jackets and real-time CCTV video monitoring. Through this collaboration, Samsung is showcasing the transformative potential of 5G applications in enhancing safety, efficiency and productivity at construction sites.

Revolutionizing healthcare with 5G connectivity

Fifth-generation wireless networks are revolutionizing healthcare, enabling tasks requiring massive data and/or fast throughputs, such as large data file transfers, remote surgical education, and improved patient data collection. With 5G, doctors can access high-quality imaging in real-time and better predict patients’ risks through access to constantly updating health data and lifestyle insights. 5G networks also allow connected medical devices to continuously monitor patient vitals, helping doctors develop personalized treatment plans for patients and improving the accuracy of diagnoses. Doctors can also conduct remote medical training sessions and live streaming with reduced latency on 5G. Medical facilities in Korea have already benefitted from Samsung’s 5G portfolio with features such as smart medical services and remote training using augmented reality (AR) glasses.

Unleashing the full potential of 5G in smart workspaces

Offices are another environment where 5G networks bring exciting capabilities. Tasks such as downloading large files, video conferencing, and accessing cloud-based applications are performed with minimal delays and interruptions. 5G networks support a large number of connected devices simultaneously, making it possible to deploy a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) devices throughout the building, including sensors for environmental monitoring, smart lighting, and security systems. Finally, 5G technology supports autonomous robots, as demonstrated by Samsung’s 5G network with NAVER in Korea, giving employees the unique experience of being served by robots that travel around the building freely, delivering employees’ coffee, lunch, and packages.

Samsung’s 5G private network solutions

Samsung has been a critical player in the development of 5G, offering cutting-edge solutions to help operators and enterprises build and deploy private 5G networks using high-bandwidth mmWave, advanced massive MIMO radios, virtualized RAN, and other top-of-the-line tools. With a deep understanding of the evolving needs of the telecommunications industry, Samsung has helped to create open, interoperable, robust, and reliable private 5G networks that can be quickly deployed, delivering ultra-fast speeds, low latency, and massive connectivity, enabling a wide range of innovative use cases across industries.

As a leader in the 5G space, Samsung is committed to helping operators and enterprises unlock the full potential of this technology, paving the way for a new era of connectivity and innovation. As we move forward, it is clear that 5G will play an increasingly critical role in driving growth, innovation, and competitiveness across various industries, making it an exciting time to be at the forefront of this technological revolution.
