Nokia said the data center interconnect solutions will link seven facilities.
Nokia said it is providing Chinese phone maker and internet service provider Xiaomi with a fiber optic network to link seven data centers in the Beijing region.
For the project, Nokia is providing its data center interconnect solution based on the company’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch and managed by the Network Services Platform. The 1830 PSS is described as a high-performance dense wavelength division multiplexing platform designed to deliver the capacity, security and control required for enterprise data center networks.
“This initiative is enabling Xiaomi to maximize network capacity, address fast-growing traffic demands and enjoy the flexibility of the cloud with the security, reliability and performance of a private network,” explained Drazen Lukic, head of Nokia’s China IP and Optical Networks Business Group.
Ericsson, Qualcomm and NTT DoCoMo plan to carry out 5G NR field trials in Japan
Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies and NTT DoCoMo announced plans to conduct interoperability testing and over-the-air field trials in Japan based on the “5G New Radio” specifications being developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project. The companies said the trials will operate in 4.5 GHz and 28 GHz bands, showcasing the radio design across diverse spectrum bands.
“The trials intend to drive the mobile ecosystem toward rapid validation and commercialization of 5G NR technologies at scale, enabling timely commercial network launches based on 3GPP [Release 15] standard compliant 5G NR infrastructure and devices,” the firms said in a joint statement.
The trials is set to use device prototypes from Qualcomm, base station solutions from Ericsson and trial environments from NTT DoCoMo to simulate real-world scenarios across a set of use cases and deployment scenarios. The trials are set to begun in the first half of 2018.
“NTT DoCoMo plans to deploy a 5G NR commercial system by 2020, and it is essential that the industry cooperate closely to create a 5G ecosystem in a timely manner,” said NTT DoCoMo EVP and CTO Seizo Onoe.
