Sunrise Telecom looks to Huawei for ‘defect-free’ network

Latest agreement between Swiss telecom operator Sunrise and Huawei builds on initial strategic partnership from 2012.

BARCELONA, Spain – Swiss telecommunications operator Sunrise Telecom extended a previous partnership with Huawei as part of the company’s goal of creating a “defect-free” network. The deal was highlighted by Sunrise CEO Olaf Swantee during a press conference at the 2017 Mobile World Congress event taking place this week in Barcelona, Spain.

“With Huawei, we are close to this objective,” Swantee said. “We operate a very standardized and modern infrastructure. Our main objective with this new agreement is to have a defect-free infrastructure.”

Sunrise Telecom and Huawei signed a strategic partnership last October, which called for the vendor to supply solutions connected with information technology infrastructure, communications technology networks, field operations and spare parts management. Once the contract is executed, Huawei will provide an ICT Converged Operation solution to manage IT and CT networks through converged operation processes; and resources and tools designed to help the Swiss company improve operations and progress on its digital transformation goals.

Huawei said its ICT Managed Services solution includes mobile network operations, fixed network operations, network functions virtualization operations, IT operations and enterprise cloud.

“We are very pleased with this partnership with Huawei and we are looking forward to strengthening this agreement in the future,” the Swantee said.

Sunrise CTO Elmar Grasser noted the firms initially partnered in 2012, to focus on mobile networks, with the extension expected to provide improvements to efficiency and service quality.

Commenting on future deployments of “5G” technology in Switzerland, Swantee said the country will see initial deployments covering large metropolitan areas such as Zurich and Geneva.

“We believe that we will be able to bring some 5G-based applications to Switzerland including augmented reality, virtual reality, among others,” Swantee explained.

Huawei said it signed 56 managed service contracts in 2016, and currently manages more than 160 networks in 92 countries.
