AIS said it recently completed a 5G RedCap commercial test in Bangkok in partnership with Huawei

Thai operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) said it had completed verification of 5G RedCap technology with Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE.

In a statement, AIS said that it recently completed what it claimed to be Thailand’s first 5G RedCap commercial test in Bangkok in partnership with Huawei.

The test was conducted on both 700 MHz and 2600 MHz commercial networks, and used diversified commercial RedCap terminals, including DTU (Data Transfer Units) and CCTV cameras. Comprehensive capabilities were verified during the test, including downlink and uplink peak throughput, mobility performance and coexistence of RedCap and eMBB UEs.

5G RedCap is a new technology defined in 3GPP Release 17. It is designed for medium and high-speed IoT applications, such as industrial sensors, smart wearables and video surveillance.

Wasit Wattanasap, head of nationwide operations and support nusiness unit at AIS, said: “RedCap is an important achievement of 5G technology evolution. It will reduce 70% of 5G module costs, accelerating 5G industry applications. AIS will cooperate with Huawei and industry partners to explore RedCap applications in industrial control, energy and power, smart cities, smart wearables and more.”

“RedCap is a promising technology to unleash 5G network potential, could be used in diversified scenarios. Huawei will continue to help AIS build high-quality 5G network through JIC innovation, incubate more 5G applications with industry partners and support acceleration of Thailand industry digital transformation,” Huawei said.

In a separate release, AIS said it recently accomplished the first collaborative validation of 5G RedCap in 2.6GHz in Southeast Asia in partnership with ZTE and MediaTek.

AIS highlighted that the RedCap validation was successfully completed at the AZ Innovation Center in Bangkok last month. The tests were executed using AIS’s commercial 5G spectrum TDD 2.6GHz, including the test cases such as network access, mobility and voice services.

The Thai operator also said that the first call for VoNR services validated RedCap’s ability to provide users with clearer and more natural calling experiences. Also, the recent RedCap tests verified the compatibility of MediaTek’s forthcoming RedCap platforms with ZTE’s wireless systems for AIS 5G commercial spectrum and paved the way for RedCap deployment in commercial 5G network, the Asian operator said.

“The collaboration between ZTE Corporation, MediaTek, and AIS is not merely a validation of innovative technology, It serves as a vivid example of international cooperation in the communication domain. This successful testing establishes a sturdy foundation for the application of RedCap technology in Thailand and charts new pathways for the global development of 5G new technology. In the future, the three parties will continue to deepen their collaboration, exploring more innovative applications to offer users more convenient, efficient and intelligent communication experiences,” AIS said.
