India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been taking several actions to accelerate the 6G research and development in the country, with the aim of ensuring that India can contribute to the development and manufacturing of 6G systems by 2030, local newspaper The Economic Times reported, citing DoT’s secretary Neeraj Mital.
“The Department of Telecommunications has taken lots of steps to integrate and accelerate the 6G research and innovation in the country so that we can contribute to this technology’s development and manufacturing by 2030,” Mittal was quoted as saying.
He noted that the DoT had previously set up a technology innovation group with members across the supply chain to develop the vision, mission and goals for 6G.
“They constituted six task forces focusing on multidisciplinary innovative solutions, multi-platform next-generation networks, spectrum for next-generation requirements, devices, standards for contribution and funding, research and development,” Mittal said.
Earlier this year, the government of India unveiled a national 6G project with the aim of launching this technology by 2030. 6G has not yet been standardized, but research and development of candidate technologies and spectrum is well underway.
The main aim of the 6G initiative is to identify and fund research and deployment of the next-generation technology in the country, according to a vision document unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the document, the government has appointed a council to oversee the project and focus on issues such as standardization, identification of suitable spectrum for 6G, create an ecosystem for devices and systems, among other things.
Another key focus of the council will be on new technologies such as terahertz communication, radio interfaces, tactile internet, artificial intelligence for connected intelligence, new encoding methods and waveforms chipsets for 6G devices, according to the vision document unveiled by the government.
Earlier this month, ATIS’ Next G Alliance (NGA) and India’s Bharat 6G Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration opportunities on 6G wireless technologies.
The main aim of the collaboration is to align research and development priorities that support a “common 6G vision” and to create secure and trusted telecommunications as well as resilient supply chains, the partners said.
The Bharat 6G Alliance is an initiative of Indian industry, academia, national research institutions and standards organizations, with the main aim of designing, developing and deploying technology for future 6G systems. Bharat 6G Alliance aims to promote the ecosystem for research, design, development, field testing, security, certification and manufacturing of telecom products and solutions.
