Kagan: MWC23 Barcelona shows wireless growth beyond 5G

Wireless is not just about 5G; AI, Chatbot, ChatGPT, Bard and IoT

The worldwide wireless industry is preparing for the big Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. 5G will continue to be big, but there is also so much more we need to focus on. There are plenty of new and rapidly growing areas to focus on. Some sectors like 5G are continuing on their upward growth curve, while others are brand new sectors, just starting their growth wave.

First, based on what we have seen with attendance at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, I would say MWC23 will also be a success. While some companies and individuals will still avoid attending due to coronavirus fears, I think attendance will be up significantly year over year.

The first thing we need to understand is that wireless is not just about 5G any longer. There is a larger world of technology, which will use wireless to communicate, and that is an incredible, new growth opportunity for the industry.

So, let’s take a closer look at a few of these new growth areas.

Private wireless, Betacom with Qualcomm, Ericsson with Cradlepoint

Private Wireless Networks are an important growth sector. It gives the user company more control, better service quality, stronger signal and security compared with the public wireless networks.

There are different slices of the private wireless pie including public, private and hybrid.

Wireless carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T see the growth opportunity and are entering this space, delivering hybrid private wireless services on their public wireless network, to companies, colleges and governments.

There are also a wide range of important companies which provide custom private wireless services like Betacom who is partnered with Qualcomm, Ericsson with Cradlepoint, Nokia, Cisco, NTT, Microsoft, Google and others.

5G wireless growth expands to focus on the coming 6G space

Over recent years we have been focused on 5G. This year, we will also see plenty of focus on next generation 5G ideas and strategies.

Also expect 6G to start playing an important role in the wireless conversation as companies are starting to focus on this next, big step.

Plus, companies are starting to focus on more advanced 5G services. In fact, Huawei is talking about 5.5G, which takes wireless to the next level.

NTT, Juniper Networks, Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Qualcomm show growth

Expect companies like NTT, Juniper Networks, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and others focusing more attention on new growth opportunities for them and for the wireless industry.

This year, in Artificial Intelligence is suddenly taking a giant leap into the fast lane of growth with the introduction of ChatGPT from OpenAI and the investment from Microsoft. Google said they would be also be releasing their version called Bard.

In addition, I see other companies like Amazon, Facebook Meta and more also jumping into this Chatbot space.

Yes, advanced AI and ChatBot technology will continue its growth journey, transforming industry after industry. And wireless will play a crucial role in its development. Wireless and wire line broadband are how they will communicate.

In fact, wireless is how AI and Chatbot tech will connect us all.

AI and Chatbot technology like Microsoft, ChatGPT and Google Bard

Chatbot technology lets users have a conversation with AI. That means this will take Artificial Intelligence from a tool for companies and governments to a technology for the end user.

We have all heard stories about how college students use AI and Chatbot technology to write term papers and how teachers cannot tell the difference. This is just the beginning.

In fact, I expect to hear more about how OpenAI and Google will help solve this new problem they are creating. They will discuss technology which will read reports in order to determine if it was written by a student or AI.

Generative AI is another important sector, which is on a rapid growth path. This let’s AI write its own code. This can also let it choose and decide.

Within this exciting and fast-growing industry, we also need to have serious focus on the potential problems it will create.

We must remain in control in this new world, along with all the growth opportunities AI presents going forward for companies and individuals.

9-1-1 Emergency Services, Operator Services, Directory Assistance

Yesterday, we used landline telephone service to connect with 9-1-1 Emergency Services, Operator services and Directory Assistance.

As the number of landlines continue to decline, and as we use wireless, VoIP, fiber and more to communicate, traditional telephone companies are no longer providing these important services.

However, customers still want and need them. That’s why we are starting to see new services starting to be offered for all these different technologies and services.

Verizon works with Viiz to provide emergency services to Apple Watch

Example, Verizon works with Viiz to provide these services to their Apple Watch customers.

Verizon also has lots of other devices and services which can all use this kind of service. So, I expect this relationship to continue to grow going forward.

And in fact, every competitor who makes devices or offers services faces the same challenge. So, I believe we will see this sector continue to change and grow going forward.

I see this becoming a real growth sector going forward.

Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, Optimum, Cox Mobile MVNO resellers

In addition, there are plenty of other mobile service providers and equipment makers worldwide like T-Mobile, AT&T, Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, Optimum, Cox Mobile, Cricket, Frontier, Lumen Technologies, CenturyLink and many others.

MWC23 has several other areas they will focus on including 5G Acceleration, which is about untapping the value in 5G for all players with millions of devices and waves of new data being collected. Plus, areas they highlight like Fintech, Digital Everything, OpenNet, Reality+ and more.

So, bottom line, wireless is at the center of our universe going forward for as far as we can see. It is the network that is carrying the technology that is reshaping our society, worldwide.

Wireless is center of our changing electronics universe

That presents many, incredible, new growth opportunities for investors, workers and users whether that be individuals, companies, colleges, hospitals, governments and more.

We need to understand the changes that are occurring and the shift that continues to reshape our society.

Just like when the Apple iPhone and Google Android entered the smartphone market and started a significant change wave fifteen years ago, taking the lead away from Blackberry and Palm.

The opportunity and threat continue today with new technology like AI, IoT, metaverse, AR, VR, automated driving and so much more.

Growth in wireless industry is shifting focus from one area to another

The traditional wireless industry itself, while it remains a vital part of our infrastructure going forward, has also started to show slowing growth in recent years. That means services providers and smartphone, tablet and device makers.

The rapid growth in the wireless industry is shifting and will come from new sectors of this important industry.

Plus, there are so many other areas which are all important and which will be on display at MWC23.

There will be many conversations and debates as we continue to move forward as the wireless industry continues its long and solid zig-zag growth wave.

What we have discussed here are just a few of the interesting areas in the wireless industry. What this means is there are plenty of new growth opportunities and they should all be on our radar in this fast changing and growing industry.

So, get prepared. MWC23 should be quite a show indeed.
