Under the new partnership, Telia committed to install 9,000 smart IoT units
Swedish telecom group Telia and compatriot company Stockholm Exergi have entered into a strategic partnership that will focus on the development of smart buildings.
The two partners said that the initial step under this new agreement is to upgrade technology in thousands of buildings and improve steering of district heating.
Stockholm Exergi’s goal is to make Sweden’s capital Stockholm an even more sustainable city, using 100% renewable and recycled energy by 2030. In order to reach this ambitious goal, Stockholm Exergy is working on several fronts, including making power and energy consumption more efficient through modern technology and digital solutions, leading to financial savings, improved comfort and reduced environmental impact, the company said.
Because of the need for extensive infrastructure upgrades, Stockholm Exergi decided to enter into a new framework agreement with Telia for the installation of 9,000 smart IoT units during a three-year period.
“With this solution, we can support our customers to be more efficient in terms of property power and energy consumption. It makes it easier to control temperature in the buildings with a more balanced indoor temperature as a result,” said Stefan Patrikson, business development director at Stockholm Exergi.
After the installation of an IoT unit, property owners can access digital services for smarter energy optimization, which is a key step towards digitalization of a building’s energy system. This gives property owners a complete digital overview of all properties. The two partners also highlighted that some maintenance will be replaced by digital and automated solutions.

By teaming up, we make Stockholm even greener, more innovative and a bit smarter,” said Brendan Ives, head of division X at Telia Company.
Last month, Telia Company partnered with Norwegian firm Effera to develop digitalization solutions for the construction industry.
The two partners said the new solutions will allow the efficient running of construction sites, with controls over materials and resources and a high level of security and safety for workers.
Telia said that sensors located at construction sites will provide information about the equipment being used in order to maximize resources.
The Nordic telco explained that the gathering of information is done via sensors connected to Telia’s IoT infrastructure and to narrowband internet of thing and LTE-M technologies. These sensors can be attached to any machine, according to Telia. Personnel on-site can be detected by using the connected RFID sensors, subsequently allowing access to real-time information about who handles what machine, the air quality and the status of any water systems, among other parameters.
