The smart city initiatives will be implemented in Tianfu New Area
Finnish network infrastructure vendor Nokia and China’s Tianfu New Area Chengdu Administrative Committee have signed a strategic agreement to develop smart city initiatives.
Under the terms of the smart city deal, both parties will collaborate on the establishment of the new digital city including the construction of the data center and related telecom infrastructure, the deployment of an internet of things (IoT) trial, the incubation of IoT applications and devices, big data, and the deployment of an end-to-end optics network in Tianfu New Area.
In December 2015, Nokia announced plans for a global R&D center in Chengdu focusing on next-generation telecom networks, IoT, big data and cloud technologies. Operations at the center have already started, employing hundreds of employees in research and development activities.
“The Tianfu New Area development project presents an exciting opportunity to build a smart city – or actually a smart region – from the ground up,” Mike Wang, president of Greater China for Nokia, said. “The communications network will serve as the brain and nervous system of the smart city, and we welcome the opportunity to apply Nokia’s technology and know-how to the challenge of building the digital infrastructure that will support this groundbreaking effort.”

Tianfu New Area was officially launched in December 2011. The establishment of Chengdu Tianfu New Area aims at reconstructing a modern international urban area suitable for residence, industry and commerce.The project involves in total three cities, seven counties and 37 towns and villages.
