Panel: Does Digital Transformation start with data or your business process?

Moderator James Brehm, Founder & Chief Technology Evangelist at James Brehm & Associates is joined by Mike Troiano, VP IoT, AT&T
and Christopher Moorhead, VP Strategic Accounts, Gemalto to discuss digital transformation at the Enterprise IoT Summit in Austin Texas

Mike Troiano kicked off the panel saying that the main discussion they have with customers is really around two basic use cases for Internet of Things. “These use cases are if they are trying to create a new product and therefore create a new revenue stream or if they are trying to drive operational efficiencies out of their business through the assistance of IoT.”

Moorhead said that Gemalto’s customers are really looking to expand the markets they are currently addressing. “A lot of people have their business cases in the US starting up and they are looking at expanding globally and to do so as efficiently as possible. What we are seeing is that there are a lot of changes in the networks globally and in order to plan a global deployment you have to be strategic with your design process in order to reach all the individual markets,” he said.

“What we see are very interesting use cases, where people have primary and secondary markets for their products, so they want the leading edge technology for their primary markets like Cat-1 and Cat-M but then after a three to four year life span of their products they will be also selling to other secondary markets where networks will be mainly 2G and 3G.”

Troiano also said that security is among one of the top concerns of clients when they start the process to implement an IoT strategy. “We have a lot of questions regarding security. This is the number one issue.” The executive also said that AT&T has launched a professional services organization in January 2017 in order to help customers in the journey to implement a digital transformation process.

An independent advisor and technology evangelist, James Brehm is one of the leading voices on the state of the IoT and M2M market. Leveraging experience gained in a decade long career as an industry analyst after holding multiple marketing and customer facing roles with leading technology companies, Brehm launched James Brehm & Associates in early 2014 to serve the very specific needs of his customers – pragmatic, actionable advice and metrics grounded in reality.

Over the past decade, he has spoken to various groups on topics including wireless services, mobile marketing and advertising, mobile content, VoIP, activation and provisioning, service creation, mobile apps, premium messaging, wireless security, fixed-mobile convergence, mobile broadband (LTE and WiMAX), the telecom regulatory environment and vertical market deployment of web-enabled services.

From 2011 to 2014, Brehm served as practice leader, strategist and senior consultant for Compass Intelligence. Prior to joining Compass Intelligence, Brehm spent nine years in multiple roles at Growth Consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. Prior to joining Frost & Sullivan, Brehm worked in marketing, sales management, and business development at Rackspace Managed Hosting and Interland (now Web.com), two of the largest pure play web hosting companies in the U.S. His responsibilities included researching the competitive landscape of the market, developing new product offerings, assessing emerging markets, improving the overall value chain for Global 1000 clients, due diligence, and acquisition analysis. Brehm will use his accumulation of unique knowledge and skills to predict and unlock the potential of the IoT and M2M spaces.

In In Chris Moorhead’ 10 years with Gemalto, he has concentrated on the M2M/IoT industry to establish and grow relationships with Gemalto’s cellular module and solution customers, with a focus on IoT pioneers in North America and strategic partnerships within the Western Region. Gemalto’s global culture and worldwide presence has provided Chris the opportunity to develop a true international perspective of the M2M/IoT industry.
