Historic rain is causing widespread flooding in Louisiana that has claimed at least seven lives and left around 20,000 people stranded, according to ABC News. As recovery efforts gear up, AT&T customers experienced a major network outage.
In a statement, AT&T said the problem was caused when a switching center in Baton Rouge was flooded. According to local press reports, it seems the network outage began impacting customers on Sunday morning and problems were largely resolved by Sunday evening.
In the most recent update, published in full by The Creole, AT&T said: “Our restoration work continues around the clock to restore service for affected customers after our mobility switching center in Baton Rouge flooded during severe weather. As progress is made during these efforts, service will return for some customers and others may continue to experience intermittent service. We are deploying resources including generators, cell on light trucks and emergency communications vehicles to help restore service as quickly as possible.”
According to the New Orleans Advocate, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said during a Sunday press conference the network outage “affects communications, whether people trying to request help, or whether we’re trying to communicate with people to make sure we’re directing assets correctly. It does present a problem.”
