T-Mobile US continues holiday blitz with Samsung, Netflix offers

Starting Dec. 18, T-Mobile US will begin its final offer of the holiday season. The “Un-carrier” plans to offer customers $100 off the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Edge+ or Note5 smartphones, as well as a full year of Netflix when they purchase one of the Samsung phones.

True to form, T-Mobile US president and CEO John Legere used the promotion as a way to take a shot at the carriers’ competition.  “Today we’re putting the final bow on a fantastic month of gifts to all wireless customers,” Legere said. “The carriers’ holiday ‘deals’ are full of trickery and promises in exchange for a set of handcuffs and higher costs down the road. That’s not a gift, and it’s not how the Un-carrier does it. Starting this weekend, we’re giving you $100 off the top on Samsung’s hottest phones, plus a year of Netflix. Period.”

Netflix is one of the streaming video services that falls under T-Mobile US’ Binge On promotion, which allows customers to watch streaming video without using their data allotment.

T-Mobile US has been pushing hard to lure customers from competitors in the waning months of 2015. In November, the operator announced it was giving customers three free months of unlimited LTE service. A few days later, they began offering $200 credits per line to Sprint customers who switched to T-Mobile US service. Shortly after that they offered AT&T Mobility customers a free Apple iPhone memory upgrade and half off accessories, and Verizon Wireless customers a full year of Hulu and half off phone accessories when they switched.

The other three major U.S carriers have been busy as well. Knowing it was in the crosshairs of T-Mobile US, Verizon Wireless offered 2 gigabytes of free data per month to every device added or upgraded on a current XL or XXL data plan. The offer is good for up to 10 lines of service, with the bonus data included for as long as the line remains active on either data bucket. The bonus data is shareable across all devices connected to the data package, including tablets and mobile hot spots, though customers adding or upgrading a tablet or mobile hot spot are not eligible to receive the 2 GB data boost.

Over the past weekend, AT&T Mobility offered up the always popular “buy-one, get-one” deal for select smartphones, most pointedly the Apple iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S6 devices. The deal does have some financial nets in that customers need to sign up for the carrier’s 30-month Next 24 device financing program as well as bring a new line of service to garner the BOGO deal.

In November, Sprint announced the relaunch of its 50% discount promotion for customers who switched from the other carriers.
