Deutsche Telekom to take on Amazon, Google on cloud

German company wants to double cloud revenue to more than $2.25B annually by 2018

Deutsche Telekom wants to dominate the cloud-services market in Europe. The German telecom company announced plans to double cloud revenue to more than $2.25 billion annually by 2018.

Chinese telecom infrastructure provider Huawei announced this week at its Innovation Days event in Munich, that it supplies DT with hardware for the cloud business. T-System is the DT subsidiary that manages the company’s cloud-based service offerings. Earlier this year, T-Systems and Huawei announced an expanded IT partnership with emphasis on private cloud solutions.

Ferri Abolhassan, head of the IT division for T-Systems, said the company wants to grow the cloud platform business by more than 20% each year; the goal is “to become the leading provider for businesses in Europe.” He specifically name-checked cloud hosting competitors Google and Amazon as firms DT “plans to pit itself more strongly against.”

“Huawei provides hardware and solutions expertise, while we offer cloud management with the best availability, via the best network,” Abolhassan said. “In this way, we are securing the best balance of price, service and quality for our customers when migrating their IT to the cloud.”

T-Systems provides cloud services to major multinationals like Shell, Daimler and Thyssen-Krupp.

DT reps stressed the security associated with both private cloud access and storage of personal information is hosted in German data centers, which means the data is subject to strict German protection regulations.

“In cloud computing,” Abolhassan said, “data center location brings the valuable advantage of security. Our customers and partners place their full trust in Deutsch Telekom in this regard.”

Haibo Zhang, president of Huawei Deutsche Telekom’s key account department, described the expanding relationship between the two companies as “taking the next step and combining our know-how and cutting-edge technology in the public cloud area to ensure that companies of all sizes are provided with the cloud of their choice.”
