Nokia slashes 1,800 jobs after improved Q3 results: Layoffs come as Nokia changes developer playground once again
Nokia Corp. (NOK) could well be on its way to reversing the downward spiral that it’s been on for about three years. If the company’s just-reported earnings for the third quarter don’t build overwhelming confidence in that notion, the firm’s new CEO Stephen Elop has at least bought himself some more patience from investors.
Nokia reported a net income of $740 million, a considerable improvement from the year-ago period when it reported a $782 million loss. Stock is up at least 6.6% to $11.55, but that won’t mean much to the 1,800 employees that Nokia said it plans to sack. … Read More

U.S. faces spectrum crunch by 2014: Freeing 275 megahertz of spectrum could save $120B
The United States will need another 275 megahertz of spectrum by 2014 to keep up with mobile broadband demand, according to a white paper the Federal Communications Commission just released. Making that 275 megahertz of spectrum available for mobile broadband would save $120 billion in capital expenses, the study concluded. The FCC released the Omnibus Broadband Initiative technical white paper as part of its recommendation to free up 500 megahertz of spectrum in the next 10 years, part of the National Broadband Plan and a presidential directive. The paper discusses device usage, the impact of new cell tower builds and the economic importance of wireless broadband usage, among other things. … Read More

Clearwire pushes past 90 Mbps in LTE trials
Clearwire Corp.’s (CLWR) trial of LTE technology is showing promising results that have pushed well-known web-based network speed testing sites to their limits, according to the company’s chief commercial officer Michael Sievert. The test results were shown using the Speedtest.com web site in a moving environment. … Read More

White iPhone 4 reportedly doomed because of color fade
Remember that white iPhone 4 that Apple Inc. (AAPL) delayed again and again? It’s cropped up again and as with all things Apple, it would be wise to take this one with a grain of salt. Pocket-lint spotted one in the wild at a press event in New York City today and not only did it manage to snap some shots of the device, but the owner (who declined to be named) offered some information about why the white iPhone 4 is likely doomed to never see the light of day. … Read More
