Brazilian telecom agency Anatel said that six telecom groups have submitted bids for Brazil’s upcoming frequency tenders in the 2.5 GHz and 450 MHz bands. The bidding events are intended to help roll out LTE technology throughout the country.
The participating telecom groups are Claro (which belongs to América Móvil), TIM Brasil (part of Telecom Italia), Brazilian Oi, Sky do Brasil SA (owned by DirecTV Group Inc.), Vivo (part of Spanish-owned Telefónica) and Sunrise Telecomunicações (owned by Soros Fund Management LLC).
Anatel is scheduled to open bids on June 12. Brazil estimates that the auction will generate $1.9 billion (R$ 3.85 billion) in revenue.
On April 12, Anatel approved bidding documents for the frequency bands of 2.5 GHz, which is destined for LTE, and 450 MHz, which will be dedicated to improving coverage in rural areas. (Read the full document here—in Portuguese)
Among Anatel’s auction goals are: immediate coverage of municipalities where the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 Fifa World Cup will take place; commitment to coverage that prioritizes major construction network infrastructure; and encouragement of competition in operating services with the participation of small, medium and large companies.
