Jury finds Google did not infringe Oracle patents

A new chapter in the Oracle versus Google lawsuit: A federal jury said Wednesday that Google (GOOG) did not infringe Oracle (ORCL) patents that protect Oracle’s Java technology. The decision came after the jury found earlier in May that Google had infringed Oracle’s copyrights of Java APIs when it created its Android operating system.

The judge must still decide whether APIs qualify for copyright protection in the third phase of the trial.

A Google spokesperson noted in a statement that the “jury verdict that Android does not infringe Oracle’s patents was a victory not just for Google but the entire Android ecosystem.”

Oracle’s original complaint filed in August 2010 listed seven allegations. The company alleged that Google’s Android mobile phone software infringes on patents and copyrights that protect Java.

Oracle took over the copyrights and patents for Java when it bought Sun Microsystems in 2009 for $7.4 billion.
