Mincom backing optical communications to increase broadband speeds – Brazil

Brazil’s communications ministry (Minicom) has thrown its support behind the development of optical communication systems that aim to reach broadband transmission rates of 100 Gbps.

Brazilian research and development institute CPqD launched the project in 2010 and the ministry’s telecommunications technology development fund (Funttel) will contribute 90mn reais (US$54mn) over four years, its largest investment in a single program, Minicom said in a statement.

CPqD is focusing on the construction of backbones to meet growing demand for data and voice services.
