The Wholesale Applications Community, which is an alliance of telecom companies focused on building an open applications platform, announced it is now a corporate entity and said it has teamed up with the Joint Innovation Lab.
JIL is a joint venture of China Mobile, Softbank Mobile, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. The transaction with JIL is expected to be completed in September.
Peter Suh, formerly CEO of JIL, has been named CEO of the WAC.
The group said its goal is to deliver a platform to allow operators to distribute applications through their own storefronts and charge users through their existing phone bill. WAC said it hopes to publish its initial specifications and components of its SDK to developers in November.
