The Wall Street Journal Digital Network launched an on-device portal allowing users to access online content from Microsoft Corp.-based Windows Mobile-enabled devices.
The downloadable application, which was developed by Action Engine, delivers news, videos and streaming podcasts from WSJ.com, MarketWatch.com and Barrons.com. Windows Mobile is sponsoring the ad-supported offering.
“We recognize that today’s busy professionals need continuous access to top business and financial news,” said Richard Trumble, business development director for Dow Jones & Company, which Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. recently acquired for $5.6 billion. “By offering this mobile application that consumers can download directly onto their phones, we are offering seamless access . across our suite of news sites.”
The offering underscores Murdoch’s efforts to take much of the Wall Street Journal’s content out from behind a paid subscription wall.
WSJ.com has been one of the Web’s most successful subscription news businesses, but the Wall Street Journal Europe two weeks ago said the company has launched a new Web site offering free access to all its editorials and opinion columns; hard news is still available only to subscribers.
