Alltel looks to Motricity for updated wireless Web services

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.-Alltel Corp. partnered with mobile content provider Motricity to launch a new version of Alltel’s Axcess Web wireless Internet service.

The service, which costs $6 a month, gives subscribers easier access to ringtones, wallpaper and Internet browsing, according to Alltel. For example, users get immediate access to local weather conditions, news headlines and a search feature when they launch their browser.

“Alltel’s Axcess Web, powered by Motricity’s technologies and services, provides a personalized, robust mobile experience for Alltel customers,” said Ryan Wuerch, chairman and chief executive officer of Motricity.

Alltel said that Axcess Web is available today to customers with a Nokia Corp. 6235i handset, and the enhanced service should be available to all Alltel customers by March.

“We are committed to making it convenient for our customers to download the content they need and want,” said Wade McGill, vice president of wireless product management for Alltel. “Now Alltel customers will have more access to ringtones and wallpapers than ever before.”

Motricity has been racking up a number of notable deals. Most recently the company teamed with Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications L.P. to power the handset vendor’s application download service.
