Nokia cuts 50 R&D positions, Motorola closes some chip units

IRVING, Texas-Nokia Corp. said it cut 50 positions from its research and development facility in Texas. The company said the layoffs were primarily in its radio network and core network research divisions.

Nokia spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong said the move was part of an effort to improve operational efficiencies and concentrate Nokia’s research and development programs into fewer sites. Armstrong said the cuts represented just a fraction of the company’s overall research and development program, which covers more than 19,000 positions.

Separately, Motorola Inc. said it will shut down its semiconductor chip businesses in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong and move them to China and India, according to an Associated Press report. Motorola did not immediately return calls for comment. The report said the cuts were designed to trim costs and concentrate efforts in the same locations.
