BOSTON-C2C Fiber Networks, a “lit” services broadband communications provider for telecommunications carriers including wireless carriers seeking to provide last-mile connectivity, has expanded its network to include the Boston metro area.
As a “lit” services provider, C2C owns and operates “lit,” or operational, backhaul fiber that telecommunications carriers can load equipment onto to activate their networks. Four factors have led to demand for C2C’s “lit” network, explained President and Chief Executive Officer Eric Ensor:
- increasing demand for broadband services;
- carrier need for capital efficiency;
- willingness from building owners and/or tower owners for alternative providers of connectivity;
- and C2C’s unique strategy.
Perhaps the biggest benefit “lit” services offer wireless carriers is the opportunity for network sharing, which will lead to operational cost savings. And with C2C’s network, carriers “don’t have to bear the burden of operating the entire network themselves,” added Ensor.
Before expanding its coverage to downtown Boston, Cambridge and Waltham, C2C’s network covered the I-495 corridor in eastern Massachusetts. C2C plans to move into additional markets once its concept is proven in Boston, Ensor said, adding that geographical concentration going forward would make sense.
All of the wireless carriers offering coverage in Boston, in addition to traditional wireline carriers and ISPs, are potential C2C customers. The expansion, however, “should make us substantially more attractive to wireless carriers,” said Ensor.
