Contracts: Northwestern U. selects Motorola Solns; China Unicom deploys with Alcatel-Lucent; and more

Motorola Solutions and Northwestern University announced the selection of Motorola to deploy a new P25 system to replace a 14-year-old analog trunking system and will provide a standards-based IP system that enables interoperability and greater efficiency for the Northwestern University community. The German operator, M-net Telekommunikations GmbH, has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ Next Generation Network (NGN) and IP Multimedia Subsystem platforms for the rapid introduction of new services while reducing network operating costs and improving energy efficiency. Read more.

Alcatel-Lucent announced that it was selected by China Unicom to expand the deployment of its GSM/W-CDMA solution. The deployment will be used in preparation for the future introduction of LTE in China. Read more.

Ericsson announced that they have partnered with T-Mobile USA to expand portions of the company’s 4G (HSPA+) mobile broadband network. Ericsson states the expansion will provide theoretical peak speeds up to 42 Mbps available to more than 170 million people across the United States. Read more.

Bharti Airtel, telecommunications company in Asia and Africa, announced a five year managed services agreement with Ericsson for its Africa operations. As per the agreement, Ericsson will manage and optimise Airtel’s mobile networks in Africa. Under a separate two year agreement, Ericsson will upgrade Airtel’s mobile networks in Africa with the latest technology including its multi standard RBS 6000 base station. Read more.
