NFV brings workforce challenges

AT&T looks to meet NFV-related workforce challenges head-on

One carrier seen as a leader in the move toward virtualization is AT&T, which has been working in the space for some time through its domain initiatives and more recently announced plans to have 75% of its wireline and wireless operations controlled by NFV, SDN and cloud platforms by 2020.

One challenge AT&T is looking to charge head-on is the evolution of its workforce that will come with the move toward increased virtualization.

“We are really going through a workforce transformation, which we call ‘Workforce 2020,’” explained Andre Fuetsch, SVP of architecture and design at AT&T. “We are just adopting a lot of proactive approaches that fast-moving, high-tech companies are already utilizing today. It’s more than just working in open work spaces and having better collaboration tools. It’s also a big focus externally in helping our employees boost their skills and keep them fresh and relevant.”

Fuetsch noted that AT&T has a program offering training geared toward agile software development, big data, cloud and software-defined networking.

“We are opening these up to our employees who want to be part of this evolution,” Fuetsch added, noting that AT&T has a bit of a head start through its AT&T Labs background.

“We are obviously looking for good software and problem-solving skills,” Fuetsch said, adding “what’s interesting is that we have a tremendous talent pool of world-class network experts. If you go back and look at some of the big network transformations, whether that’s from analog to digital; TDM to packet; or IP to MPLS, we have some of the industry-leading experts.

“Now, with NFV, it’s an amalgamation with good software design and engineering skills, and putting them together. It’s exciting to see the blending of these skill sets and talents together.”
