For many people, a smartphone is the only computer they will ever own or ever want to own – but should smartphones be considered personal computers by the criminal justice system? That’s the question the U.S. Supreme Court is considering this spring. The high court is looking at two appeals based on cases in which individuals were linked to criminal activity by the contacts found on their phones. It is legal for police to search a suspect’s wallet or purse during an arrest, and so far police have treated phones the same way. But it is NOT legal to search someone’s computer without a warrant.
For more details on the cases the appeals before the court, see this story from The Verge.
