Shortly after acquiring Parkway Paging, Metrocall Inc. announced the completion of its acquisition of Satellite Paging and Message Network. The purchase price was $28 million, $17 million in cash and $11 million in Metrocall stock. The deal will add nearly 100,000 new subscribers to Metrocall’s 1.1 million customers. Metrocall also gains nine retail stores, bringing its total to 17 company-owned retail stores. Metrocall expects to close deals with A+ Network and Page America later this year.
Teletouch Communications Inc. announced it completed its acquisition of AACS Communications Inc., an Arlington, Texas, paging company that provides service for 19,000 pagers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Teletouch expects the acquisition to increase reseller-generated revenues and complement its new `STAR’ program, which allows resellers access to the billing system to add new paging customers. “The acquisition of AACS Communications is an important extension of our regional paging coverage for our customers in Texas,” said Robert McMurrey, chairman and chief executive officer of Teletouch.
The AirTouch Communications Inc. board of directors declared Sept. 30 the record date for the third quarter dividends on its 6 percent Class B mandatorily convertible preferred stock, series 1996 and its 4.25 percent Class C convertible preferred stock, series 1996. The third quarter dividends for both preferred securities will be prorated for the partial dividend period starting the date the securities were issued and ending Sept. 30. Dividends are computed on the basis of a 360-day year of 12 30-day months. Both preferred stocks were issued to stockholders of Cellular Communications Inc. in connection with AirTouch’s acquisition of CCI.
Comcast Cellular One is providing free cellular phones to Ocean County Town Watch organizations. In addition, Comcast will waive activation fees to participants and offer free cellular phone calls directly to local police dispatch offices. The Town Watch program, a part of Comcast Cellular Communication Inc.’s Disaster Relief and Preparedness Program, was created to aid in emergency situations by providing wireless communications to emergency management personnel. DRAPP also supplies free cellular phones and services to emergency personnel and relief agencies when landline service is temporarily interrupted. Cellular technology is a dependable way for Town Watch volunteers to stay in touch with local police and promote community safety, said Richard Rasmus, general manager of Comcast Cellular One.
