Mobile apps projected to ring in $35B worldwide in 2014

The global mobile application market is set to surpass $35 billion in 2014, according to a new report from IDC. Mobile application developers have built more than 300,000 apps in barely more than the last three years, the firm added.
The overall number for downloaded apps is on track to jump to 76.9 billion in 2014, up almost 86% from 10.9 worldwide downloads in 2010. Much of that growth will come from the wide range of connected devices that are finally expected to come to the fore.
“Mobile app developers will ‘appify’ just about every interaction you can think of in your physical and digital worlds,” notes Scott Ellison,VP of mobile and wireless research at IDC. “The extension of mobile apps to every aspect of our personal and business lives will be one of the hallmarks of the new decade with enormous opportunities for virtually every business sector.”
The firm added: “The most obvious beneficiaries of mobile apps are mobile users who utilize mobile apps of almost every conceivable type. Whether used to kill a few minutes while waiting in line or to download updated product specs in front of a customer, mobile applications have the power to change the way we live.”
