Three North American fiber deals signaling ongoing market consolidation and expansion

Recent transactions highlight continued consolidation in the U.S. fiber sector and underscore an emphasis on business-targeted fiber

In sum – what to know:

Fiber consolidation accelerates – The U.S. fiber market is undergoing a wave of consolidation as regional and cross-border players like Bluebird, BCE, and Uniti expand scale through strategic acquisitions and mergers.

Strategic capital and infrastructure plays – From BCE’s partnership with PSP Investments to Uniti’s debt streamlining, these deals highlight how telcos and financial partners are aligning to fund large-scale fiber deployment in cost-efficient ways.

A trio of fiber transactions is reshaping the North American broadband landscape, signaling continued consolidation, investor interest, and infrastructure growth across underserved regions. Here’s a quick rundown:

1. Bluebird Fiber to acquire Everstream
Everstream has secured U.S. bankruptcy court approval to sell nearly all its operations to Bluebird Fiber for $384.6 million. Bluebird, a regional fiber provider serving the Midwest with over 11,000 route miles, is poised to absorb Everstream’s business-focused network and assets across Ohio and neighboring states. The acquisition marks a new chapter for Everstream, now poised for integration under stronger financial backing and operational scale, said Everstream CEO Ken Fitzpatrick in a press statement.

2. BCE completes acquisition of Ziply Fiber
Canada’s BCE Inc. has finalized its C$5 billion ($3.65 billion) acquisition of Ziply Fiber, expanding its North American fiber footprint by roughly 1.4 million locations and reinforcing its position as the third-largest fiber ISP in the U.S. The deal also complements a strategic partnership with PSP Investments to form Network FiberCo, aiming to reach up to 8 million fiber passings through incremental capex and a shared infrastructure strategy.

Mirko Bibic, president and CEO of BCE Inc. and Bell Canada said: “The acquisition of Ziply Fiber marks a key milestone in our fiber growth strategy by establishing a significant foothold in the attractive U.S. market.”

3. Uniti completes merger with Windstream
Last week, Uniti Group LLC officially merged with Windstream, reuniting more than a decade after Windstream spun off its network assets into what became Uniti, a real estate investment trust. Now operating as a single entity, the combined company is consolidating fiber infrastructure to serve Tier 2 and 3 markets and expand broadband availability within Windstream’s local footprint. The newly unified firm plans to streamline debt and operations under one organizational structure.

These transactions highlight continued consolidation in the U.S. fiber sector and underscore an emphasis on business-targeted fiber and expansion into previously underserved rural or incumbent territories. These moves also mirror patterns seen among Tier 1 operators, including AT&T’s Gigapower joint venture with BlackRock to extend open-access fiber infrastructure and its Lumen acquisition; and Verizon’s continued pursuit of targeted FTTH builds in select high-ROI markets and its pending acquisition of Frontier Communications.

As fiber becomes a strategic backbone for AI workloads, edge computing, and cloud-native enterprise services, telecom and infrastructure investors are moving aggressively to acquire, consolidate, and expand their fiber holdings. These deals show how infrastructure operators are repositioning themselves for a future defined by data demand, low-latency applications, and limited legacy overlap.
