CNCF sees increasing Kubernetes traction in telecom

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has published the results of what it calls a “microsurvey” of Communication Service Providers (CSPs) to gauge their progress developing cloud-native network functions and customer applications. The report frames the use of Kubernetes in telecom, the ubiquitous open-source microservices container orchestration system originally developed by Google.

The report notes that three-quarters of respondents are converting existing Physical Network Functions (PNFs) and Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) to become Cloud-native Network Functions (CNFs), and most are planning to go all the way with CNFs to replace existing PNF infrastructure and outmoded VNF solutions.

What’s pushing the move towards cloud-native? Respondents told the CNCF that making functions cloud-native helps wider corporate efforts integrating the DevOps process. Going cloud-native also removes vendor dependency and lock-in, said poll respondents, and provide more flexible deployment, management, configuration and operations of services.

The top three workloads Communication Service Providers (CSPs) are running in Kubernetes include control plane network functions (71.43%), operations (61.90%), and data plane network functions (57.14%).

“This is part of a multi-year process for these organizations,” said Taylor Carpenter, CNCF CNF Working Group co-chair and co-owner of Vulk.coop. He wasn’t surprised that Kubernetes use to manage data plane functions wasn’t further along, but he pointed to behind-the-scenes work being done by the K8s core networking groups, vendors and CSPs to close the gap.

The survey was conducted in May and June, comprising responses from 77 individuals in Europe, North America and Asia, mostly software engineers, architects, site reliability engineers, and DevOps engineers. Their biggest concerns lay around integration, compatibility, and portability issues related to vendor Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

“Integration of custom Container Network Interface (CNI) plugins supporting carrier networks topped the list [of concerns]—57.14%—followed by the use of Network Address Translation (NAT) as a default (52.38%). Incompatibility between vendors’ API endpoints and Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs) came third on 42.86%,” said the CNCF.

With vendor interoperability top of mind, two-thirds of those polled for the study view certification of CNFs favorably as a way to mitigate potential risks associated with different Kubernetes deployments. Certification of CNFs is also seen as having “potential to help simplify and streamline deployment on carriers’ networks and infrastructure” and helping to “ensure developers and operators building CNFs follow industry best practices.”
