Microsoft Corp. officially joined the voice-operated search field, unveiling a free directory-assistance service for mobile and fixed-line users.
The software giant launched Live Search 411, an offering that delivers local listings as well as weather updates, movie show times and airline information. Users with Internet-enabled devices can also receive links to maps and one-click driving directions.
The offering is powered by Tellme Networks Inc., a developer of speech-recognition software that Microsoft acquired earlier this year for a rumored $900 million. And Live Search pits Microsoft directly against Google Inc.’s GOOG-411, Nuance Voice Search from Nuance Communications Inc. and others.
The wireless industry is increasingly encouraging consumers to use speech as a way to search for content and navigate carrier decks. A recent study from Usable Products Co. found that mobile users preferred using voice rather than their fingers to navigate search applications.
