Japanese operator KDDI Corp. reported a 2.5% drop in net income during its recently closed quarter as revenues from voice services fell 17%.
The second largest carrier in Japan, which entered the smart phone market late last year, said net profit fell to $795.4 million and revenue declined 1% to $10.3 billion.
Perhaps most worrisome for the carrier is its latest average revenue per user metric, which fell 9% to $60.40. Revenue from data traffic rose 2.7% during the quarter.
KDDI is looking to boost revenue through smart phone sales and data services. It projects to sell more than one million smart phones cumulatively by the end of March, according to the Wall Street Journal.
