Lucent Technologies Inc. said it has won a $98.5 million contract to expand the CDMA network of Guangdong Unicom. It is the third phase of the expansion, which will cover eight cities.
The cities include Guangzhou, Foshan, Jiangmen, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Zhanjiang, Maoming and Yangjiang.
Under the deal, Lucent will supply CDMA2000 equipment as well as provide services.
The carrier expects to “offer new revenue-generating services such as video-on-demand, live streaming video and high-speed mobile Internet access to its subscribers. The project will also lay a solid foundation for the future because the equipment can be easily mitigated to 3G technology,” according to Lucent.
In support of its ongoing research and development, Lucent also announced an additional investment of $70 million for its Chinese 3G Mobility Research and Development Center in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu.
“These investments will enable Lucent to take advantage of the already significant contributions of researchers and engineers in China to support our customers globally,” said Mary Chan, president of global wireless research and development at Lucent.
