Measuring QoE is difficult and even more difficult is to identify the source of QoE issues within the network. Ronne Neil, Customer Experience Assurance Solutions Marketing Manager at Viavi told us: “To determine what QoE is being received, we need to know what application the end user is using at that time. We still make network performance measurements, but we need to also identify what the application is. Only by knowing what the application is can we relate those measurements to QoE, which is still the critical factor.” He added: “To identify issues, you have to look into multiple dimensions. What’s the device? What’s the application? Where’s the location? You need to be able to analyze quality of experience by these dimensions.”
One QoE issue has been identified, the second challenge is to identify the source. For voice, for instance, “I need to know what the voice quality is in different parts of the network so I can determine what part of the network has an effect on the QoE,” Paul told us. He added: “The end-to-end visibility, from handset through the core, provides a view and a perspective on QoE. It allows you to use that analysis to delve down into where the problem’s occurring and hopefully to proactively solve that before the customer even has to phone you up with the problem.”
