The Web Real-Time Communications market received a jolt with Sonus Networks unveiling its WebRTC Services Solution, which the company said was purpose-built for the cloud.
Sonus explained that its platform provides signaling from WebRTC-to-WebRTC applications and interworking from WebRTC-to-Session Initiation Protocol to provide real-time communications for mobile applications and websites accessible via a Web browser. Sonus noted that the WebRTC-to-SIP connectivity is designed to allow service providers to extend communication between existing voice and video services over the Internet.
WebRTC is seen by some as an alternative to more mobile-specific voice-over-LTE technology and similar to voice-over-IP services currently used by a number of over-the-top players. Some have noted the potential for mobile operators to take advantage of both WebRTC and VoLTE to offer services. Sonus noted that analyst firm Disruptive Analysis sees WebRTC support growing from 1.4 billion devices at the end of last year to more than 6 billion devices by end of 2019.
Sonus said that core to the new platform is its WebRTC Gateway, which is designed to interact with embedded JavaScript applications in the Web browser to establish WebRTC sessions and provide SIP interworking capabilities. Those capabilities include maintaining user registration and routing, performing user authentication, and policy and session management for Web-to-Web and Web-to-SIP sessions. The Gateway is designed to be deployed as a single virtual platform or as a multinode cluster application.
The WebRTC platform also includes Sonus’ session border controller, which acts as a security service on the edge of a commercial or enterprise network. Sonus recently announced it bolstered its SBC platform in a move designed to help enterprises deploy unified communication features. The updates include support for SIP interoperability with the H.323 standard that through the Sonus SBCs can enforce security policies at the edge of the network.
The WebRTC Services Solution also includes a software development kit, which Sonus said features JavaScript libraries and application program interfaces for media stream, peer connection and data-channel support for voice, video, instant messaging, desktop sharing, session management, presence and conferencing. The SDK also includes plug-ins for browsers that do not currently support WebRTC, including Apple’s Safari and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and APIs to support WebRTC communications across mobile applications.
