Access to acquire infrastructure company IP Infusion for $50 million

TOKYO—Japanese mobile browser company Access Co. Ltd. announced it plans to acquire IP Infusion Inc. in a deal valued at around $50 million. IP Infusion is based in San Jose, Calif., and supplies switching and routing products to the likes of Foundry Networks, L.M. Ericsson, Fujitsu, Accton and others.

Access said it plans to use the company’s technology to offer “new platforms for ubiquitous connectivity based on home gateway.” Access said it plans to ultimately sit at the nexus of 3G mobile phones and home broadband.

The move is notable as Access primarily makes Internet browser software for mobile phones. However, Access appears to be working to expand its market. The company recently completed its acquisition of PalmSource Inc., which supplies the Palm operating system for smart phones and personal digital assistants. The acquisition puts Access into the wider realm of phone software.

Access’ acquisition of IP Infusion indicates the company hopes to move beyond the cell-phone industry in general and into network infrastructure and design.
