Tata Communications said that the new 5G roaming lab is equipped with hi-tech server applications
Tata Communications, which is part of India’s Tata Group, announced the launch of a global, cloud-based 5G roaming laboratory.
In a release, the Indian company said that the main aim of the lab is to enable mobile operators to trial 5G Standalone network use cases before introducing the service to their customers.
Tata Communications noted that its cloud-based 5G roaming lab examines the international mobile roaming experience by closely monitoring traffic movement and network usage. Its tests get an “objective performance assessment” across networks, connected in the exchange process while a user is roaming, the company said.
This also includes onboarding and internet trials on 5G Standalone network, Tata Communications added.
The company also said that the new 5G roaming lab is equipped with hi-tech server applications that provide high-speed and seamless 5G roaming connectivity along with network security.
“Connectivity is a key ingredient in today’s fast-paced digital world. An internet that is fast, secure and available at all times is of paramount importance to customers, whether they are individuals or an enterprise. We are excited to introduce our newest capability in 5G roaming testing ensuring MNO customers are receiving proven services,” said Mysore Madhusudhan, executive vice president, collaboration and connected solutions at Tata Communications.
“By ensuring that the tests can take place across geographies, enhances the flexibility available to MNOs for delivering superior and agile services,” the executive added.
In November 2022, Tata Communications said it was in talks with at least 40 large businesses from different verticals about providing them with private 5G networks.
Vishy Ramaswamy, Tata Communications’s VP for 5G and digital solutions incubation, had said that the firm carried out some trials with these companies, and in certain cases, Tata Communications was already having commercials talks regarding future private 5G network deployments.
“The focus is towards setting up private networks for enterprises globally. It’s not just about the network, it’s about enabling specific enterprise use cases for businesses. The focus in terms of geographies currently is on businesses with operations in India, whether they are from the U.S. or parts of Europe, and we’ll expand to the other areas subsequently,” he said. The executive noted that the company will be initially focusing in verticals such as manufacturing, metals and mines, ports, airport and sports venues.
“So we are working on multiple use cases which can be deployed in these companies. We have done some trials, we got some trial spectrum from the government and we ran a lot of trials with enterprises not in the public domain but completely within the enterprises in various areas. (…) We announced a Private 5G center of excellence, so we are doing lots of trials with various customers,” Ramaswamy added.
In September 2022, Tata Communications opened a dedicated Private 5G Global Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Pune, India to accelerate Industry 4.0 applications and capabilities for enterprises.
