Telkomsel said that upgraded 4G/5G network will support its efforts in realizing the development of services for B2B and B2C segments
Indonesian operator Telkomsel and Ericsson will be working together to expand and bolster their existing 4G/5G networks footprint in the Asian country.
Ericsson said it has been providing connectivity and has deployed its 5G RAN products and solutions in Aceh, Northern Sumatra, Central and West Sumatra and the Eastern part of Kalimantan, including New Capitol City.
Nugroho, director of networks at Telkomsel said: “The upgraded 4G/5G network will support Telkomsel’s efforts in realizing the development of services for B2B and B2C segments, especially for the Industry 4.0 ecosystem, strengthening smart cities, and bringing greater benefits to consumers and across industrial sectors in Indonesia.”
Ericsson said it is powering Telkomsel’s network with its energy-efficient Massive MIMO antenna integrated radio AIR 3219 that will serve to address future 5G and Fixed Wireless Access and Convergence (FWA/FMC) requirements.
“We are delighted to renew and strengthen our partnership with Telkomsel within our existing radio footprint in Indonesia. Our latest generation of multi-band and Massive MIMO radios like AIR 3219, and basebands that are being deployed in the network, can help Telkomsel reduce energy consumption thereby significantly lower their energy costs and total cost of ownership going forward,” said Jerry Soper, head of Ericsson Indonesia.
“In addition to enhanced user experience for Telkomsel customers – thanks to higher speeds, low latency and large data handling capabilities – Ericsson’s 5G products and solutions will also enable Telkomsel to pursue new, innovative use cases with its enterprise and industry customers,” Soper added.
Ericsson noted that it currently supports 147 live 5G networks across 63 countries across the globe.
In March, Telkomsel had announced a partnership with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies to continue with its 5G trials in the country.
Telkomsel noted that these 5G trial will use new frequency spectrum in the 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands that had been granted by the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Informatics for trial purposes.
The three partners have started a 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial with sub-6 spectrum and millimeter wave extended-range with gigabit last-mile connectivity through 5G sub-6 GHz and mmWave devices.
The Asian carrier also noted that this latest collaboration is a continuation of the 5G extended-range technology trial, which was previously demonstrated using Ericsson’s mmWave extended range software, through Ericsson Massive MIMO AIR5322 as well as the Qualcomm FWA Platform Gen 2 on the Snapdragon X65.
Telkomsel also said that the collaboration roadmap has been expanded to become the first in Indonesia to deliver 5G Standalone NR-DC (dual connectivity), combining 100 megahertz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz frequency and 800 megahertz in the 26 GHz frequency for ultra-capacity, lower latency capabilities and peak throughput speeds of up to 7.37 Gbps.
Telkomsel had launched the first commercial 5G service in Indonesia in May 2021. The 5G network was initially launched via NonStandalone (NSA) architecture. However, the company said it planned to launch 5G Standalone services in the future, according to local press reports.
