Telekom Slovenije is to build a 5G test network at the Port of Koper (Luka Koper) in Slovenia as a platform for new automation and intelligence tools to bring greater efficiency to port and shipping operations.
The European Union (EU) backed project, which goes under the title 5G-LOGINNOV, covers installation of various devices, sensors, analytics tools, and traffic management systems. Its remit includes use of autonomous freight trucks. Partners will test similar solutions in the ports of Hamburg and Piraeus.
It has received nearly €6 million in funding from the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. This sum is supplemented by nearly €8 million from 15 partners, including Telekom Slovenije. Compatriot industrial 5G and IoT consultancy, Internet Institute, based in Ljubljana, is also involved.
The three-year project is scheduled to finish in late 2023.
Telekom Slovenije said it plans to deploy 5G for numerous virtual private networks for individual business verticals, including for logistics, transportation, healthcare, energy, factories, smart cities and communities.
Telekom Slovenije is also collaborating in an EU-backed 5G security project in Slovenia. Luka Koper currently participates in two Horizon 2020 projects, SAURON and INFRASTRESS, which both focus on physical and cyber security of ports and related improvements in protecting critical infrastructure.
Telekom Slovenije has also deployed a 5G-connected smart factory in Slovenia, deployed with local industrial networking provider Iskratel, claiming it is making rapid headway to define its 5G-geared Industry 4.0 proposition for the wider market.
