T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray to become president of technology; CFO Braxton Carter extends contract

No, John Legere is not leaving T-Mobile US to take on the role of CEO at WeWork as was widely reported last week. But the flamboyant CEO is leaving the operator effective May 1, 2020, with current President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Sievert set to take over the New T-Mobile.

Legere, in a Monday morning conference call, said he will continue to focus on either settling with state attorneys general opposed to the merger or prevail in a trial. Also relative to the merger, he highlighted that Sievert has been instrumental in T-Mobile’s growth and will help to “supercharge” the so-called Un-carrier through an integration with Sprint.

Legere said this is the culmination of a “comprehensive, multi-year succession planning process” he worked on with parent company Deutsche Telekom’s CEO Tim Hottges. “I am really pleased that he will be at the helm for the next chapter of the company’s growth,” Legere said.

Sievert joined the company in 2012 as chief marketing officer then was promoted to chief operating officer and president. Legere said Sievert will continue the “Un-carrier” strategy he has executed at T-Mobile following closure of the merger with Sprint.

As to what his exit means for the merger, it “changes nothing” Legere said. Both Legere and Sievert are members of T-Mobile’s board of directors.

Legere also announced the chief technology officer Neville Ray will become president of technology and that CFO Braxton Carter, whose contract was set to end at the end of the year will stay on through at least July 1 next year.

Sievert said he’s “so excited about the future of this company. I’ve been very fortunate to have John as a mentor and a colleague. These are big shoes to fill.”

He said the New T-Mobile network will have 16-times the capacity of the current network. “AT&T, Verizon and big cable will have no idea what hit them.”
