Colorado Springs Utilities selects Landis+Gyr for smart meter system

U.S. utility Colorado Springs Utilities has selected Swiss company Landis+Gyr to replace the utility’s metering system with an advanced IoT network technology, capable of supporting the next generation of energy management applications, the former said in a statement.

Under the terms of the agreement, the utility will deploy the Gridstream Connect platform connecting more than 590,000 electric, natural gas and water meters to an integrated network management and data acquisition system. The communication network and metering endpoints will use Mesh IP technology to support accurate and timely two-way meter communication for data collection and establish a platform to support advanced technologies.

Additionally, the new contract provides for managed services by Landis+Gyr for a total 20-year period including deployment and post-deployment services.

“Over the last 14 years, Landis+Gyr has partnered with Springs Utilities to deploy and manage advanced metering, distribution automation and load management projects. The next generation of smart grid technology provides exciting opportunities for automation of energy management at the grid edge and we look forward to helping Springs Utilities meet future goals and requirements,” said Tim Weidenbach, Senior Vice President of Sales and Customer Operations at Landis+Gyr.

“Advanced metering infrastructure is the foundation for the smart utility we intend to become,” said Phil Tunnah, Chief System Planning & Projects Officer at Colorado Springs. “We’re really excited about this agreement with Landis+Gyr to update our metering technology. This investment will assist us in creating new opportunities to help our customers better manage their services in the future.”

Landis+Gyr is a global provider of integrated energy management solutions for the utility sector. The company delivers solutions for the smart metering, grid edge intelligence and smart infrastructure segments. With sales of $ 1.8 billion, Landis+Gyr employs approximately 5,600 people in over 30 countries.

Landis+Gyr secures smart meter contract in Sweden

Earlier this month, Landis+Gyr announced a contract to deliver its Gridstream Connect solution for one million metering points to energy firm E.ON in Sweden.

Landis+Gyr’s solution for E.ON’s smart metering rollout will include one million smart electricity meters with NB-IoT/M1 communication technology and a Head End System on a Gridstream Connect platform. The work to replace the existing smart metering infrastructure will begin this month.

With this new technology, E.ON will be able to increase transparency and control in their distribution grid and enhance their customers’ experience through reliable and precise data, the Swiss company said.

“As European countries move into the second wave of smart meter rollouts, we see utilities rely on Landis+Gyr as their trusted technology partner,” said Susanne Seitz, executive vice president of Landis+Gyr’s EMEA region. “Having supplied E.ON Sweden in the country’s first smart meter deployment more than a decade ago, we are excited to continue our partnership and now provide them with our latest end-to-end offering including our Gridstream solution platform.”

“The meters are designed to manage renewable energy production from, for example, solar energy. In addition, our customers will be able to monitor the production and consumption of electricity on a close to real time basis,” said Robert Tretinjak, head of next-generation smart metering at E.ON Energy Networks.
