China Unicom inks 5G partnership with Huawei

Huawei said the 5G partnership will focus on cooperation in end-to-end 5G technical verification and cooperation with vertical industry partners

China Unicom and Huawei have signed a 5G strategic partnership agreement during Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2018, taking place this week in the Chinese city.

As part of the partnership, Huawei and China Unicom said they will focus on cooperation in end-to-end 5G technical verification, cooperation with vertical industry partners, building of the 5G ecosystem, and 5G service incubation and promotion.

During MWC 2018, Huawei and China Unicom also published a white paper on 5G-oriented digital evolution of indoor coverage. The white paper analyzes opportunities and challenges facing indoor network deployment in the 5G era and explores how to scientifically build indoor 4G networks and ensure they can efficiently evolve toward 5G in the future.

“A decade ago, network evolution from 2G to 3G brought dramatic changes to the mobile Internet,” said Shao Guanglu, vice president of China Unicom Group. “The next decade will witness 4G evolution to 5G. 5G technologies will usher in a fully-connected, intelligent world, in which there will be a faster and more extensive industrial revolution. China Unicom and Huawei will continue to deepen their cooperation in the 5G domain, focusing on 5G networking and business ecosystem construction to drive 5G development and the prosperity of 5G ecosystems and create a better-connected 5G world.”

“5G will be the cornerstone of a fully connected, intelligent world. Huawei will continue to innovate in 5G technical solutions and applications and work with China Unicom to jointly build the 5G ecosystem alliance,” said Ryan Ding, Huawei’s executive director and president of Huawei’s carrier business group.

Nokia, China Telecom and Intel showcase E2E capabilities of 5G edge cloud for latency critical new applications

In related news, Nokia, China Telecom and Intel are to conduct a demonstration of virtual reality gaming at Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2018 to show how a high-performance cloud with embedded intelligence will enable the delivery of services with extremely low latency to the mass market.

At MWC 2018, Nokia, China Telecom and Intel will use the Nokia AirScale Cloud RAN and Edge Data Center cloud platform for the demonstration showcasing virtual reality gaming over a cloud-based end-to-end network also utilizing Intel Xeon Scalable processors. The demo will also use Intel 5G mobile trial platform.

Nokia and China Telecom are working together to leverage AI and machine learning for the delivery of new virtual and augmented 5G services for industries and consumers, including entertainment, healthcare and education services, as well as for the widespread implementation of automated vehicles (V2X) and Industry 4.0.

“Intel believes there is a great opportunity to deliver compelling new services ranging from entertainment, to healthcare, to enterprise applications all running over high performance, low latency 5G networks. This VR gaming demonstration with China Telecom using the Intel 5G Mobile Trial Platform and Intel Xeon  processors in Nokia AirScale CloudRAN and Edge Data Center is a powerful proof point to what users can experience with 5G technology’s high data rate,” said Caroline Chan, vice president and general manager for the 5G Infrastructure Division, in the Intel Network Platforms Group.
